Voting closes on February 22, 2019 at 11:59 pm.

Below are this month’s nominations:

Boys:

Cyrus Lefforge / Fort Lupton High School / Boys Varsity Basketball

Student has been a strong leader for us in the locker room and on the floor. Over the past month he is averaging 15 pts, 10 rebounds and 4 blocks per game and the team has gone 5 – 2 since January. Cyrus is 6’6″ and a Senior for our team.

Gage Robertson / Skyline High School / Boys Varsity Basketball

Gage is the leading scorer in the Tri-Valley Conference at 16.8 points per game.  Our team is 8-3 in the conference and 11-7 overall. Without Gage’s performance we wouldn’t be having the successful season we are having.  I’d consider him the most valuable player in the league as other teams have many more scoring options. Gage also averages 5 rebounds/3 assists/1.5 steals per game.

Drake Engelking / Longmont High School / Varsity Boys Wrestling

Drake is a defending state champion and is currently ranked 18th nationally at 170 pounds.

Joe Cartelli / Frederick High School / Boys Varsity Basketball

Joe has averaged 22 points per game in his last 6 contests including back to back performances of 30 & 28 points on 1/29 & 1/31

RJ Lopez / Mead High School / Boys Varsity Wrestling

RJ has had great success this season on the mat and in the classroom. Recently winning the Chadron State Invitational.

Girls:

Lucy Matheson / Longmont High School/ Varsity Girls Swimming

Lucy qualified for the state swim meet in both the 200 and 500 freestyle as well as relays.

Danielle Hemelstrand / Frederick High School / Girls Varsity Basketball

Took over the leading role (in production and leadership) after injury to a teammate on Jan. 26. Since that date, leads the team with 12.5 PPG and 8.0 RPG. Led the way with 15 points in a 41-39 win over Mead on February 5.

Ashayla Powers / Skyline High School / Girls Varsity Basketball

Ashayla earned all conference in track her Freshman and Sophomore years.

Times-Call Athlete of the week for 3 games in January 29th 2019. Ashayla averaged 22.7 points and 11.3 rebounds a game.

Ashayla has not chosen a college to attend as of today.  She wants to go to college to study business, health and nutrition. Ashayla as a junior at Skyline High School has grown into the leadership role for the girls basketball team. As a leader, Ashayla  doesn’t lead by yelling and screaming at the team mates but leads by example and is humbled by her success. Ashayla recognizes her role on the team and continues to work hard in practice and games every single opportunity she gets to compete.

I have not had a athlete that is more coachable and humble in my years of coaching young athletes.  Even at her young age, she has learned to put the team goals before her own and is seeing much success as the season winds down and the team prepares for the state basketball tourney. Ashayla currently works part time during school and basketball to cover some of her own expenses.
